Caregiver Support Services

Serving as a caregiver for a loved one with physical, cognitive, or behavioral challenges can be a wonderful experience but can also come with stress and fatigue. Our caregiver services focus on providing consultation to assist you with addressing some of the specific care management needs of your loved one, as well as to provide support to assist you with managing the stress that can accompany the caregiving role and to aid in developing healthy coping strategies. 

Caregivers of persons with the following conditions may benefit from caregiver support services at the Center for Rehabilitation Psychology and Neuropsychology:

  • Acquired brain injury

    • Traumatic brain injury

    • Stroke

    • Anoxia/hypoxia

    • Brain Tumor

    • Other

  • Dementia

    • Alzheimer’s disease

    • Vascular dementia

    • Frontotemporal dementia

    • Lewy body disease

    • Other

Caregiver support services are individualized to meet the unique needs of each family and situation. Specific services may include:

  • Education regarding your loved ones’ injury or illness

  • Education about cognitive, emotional, and behavioral issues related to injury or illness

  • Individualized problem-solving regarding management of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral problems to help maximize functioning

  • Follow-up to implement such strategies in the home or community setting and to modify the approach as needed.

  • Identification of environmental adaptations that may help foster improved functioning for your loved one with injury or illness.

  • Counseling and specific cognitive and behavioral behavioral interventions to address the emotional stresses some may experience with caregiving and to address caregiver fatigue

  • Identification of community resources to assist with caregiving and coping

  • Assistance with education/training personal care attendants to develop skills to help foster positive behaviors and to maximize functional abilities.

Services may involve a one-time consultation, or may include follow-up services for several sessions, depending on your individual needs and preferences.
